It is amazing to think that almost two and a half thousand years ago Hippocrates recognised that the human body had an ability to heal itself, in fact the human body naturally tends towards health. In the East many of the practices that were popular in Hippocrates time are still practised and indeed are steadily gaining popularity in the West. It's an exciting time as we come to realise that Western and Eastern medicine can work together holistically to promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Reiki
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is not only within each of us but flows throughout the universe.
Natural Healing - naturally applied
Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Mikao Usui (1865 - 1926). In 1922 whilst meditating on a problem for many days Usui experienced a "Satori" or enlightenment, the result of whch was the inspiration to develop this healing system from ancient teachings. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki.
The Reiki Principles
Mikao Usui taught Reiki in a structured form. Not only did he give instructions on the Reiki system itself, he also required every student to adhere to the simple principles by which he lived his own life. The principles were and are very simple, yet very powerful if practised every day. .

No belief required
There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.
Reiki is not aligned to any religion
Reiki transcends your religious beliefs. Whether you are Jewish, Roman Catholic, Protestant, or of another faith Reiki can heal you. Reiki works on a principle that a greater being than us created the universe and everything in it, and gave us the ability to utilise the abundance of energy throughout it to heal. Reiki treats the entire person, the Mind, Body, and Spirit.
We Are all composed of Energy!
Energy flow is all around us. The entire universe vibrates with a universal energy. That energy is in every living and inamimate object. It can be stored, used, ortransmitted. The fact you are able to read this text at all is due to the reflection of energy in the form of light waves. The waves that crash on the shore expend their stored energy on the beach. Solar panels store the energy from light and convert into another energy called electricity.
A Typical Treatment
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner places their hands non-intrusively on, or a little above the body depending on the areas being treated.
Reiki doesn't just treat your symptom, it treats you
The whole person is treated rather than specific symptom in accordance with the Eastern belief that in treating the whole we promote wellness using the bodies inherent ability to heal itself. A full treatment takes about one hour with each position held for several minutes. Reiki is administered by the practitioner tapping into the universal energy and directing it with their hands to the clients body. They do not use their own but simply act as a conduit allowing the natural universal energy to flow to wherever it is required.
